Price to Compare - ComEd
For ease of comparison, we list the Price to Compare before we break down the charges on your utility bill. Items A, B and C below reflect the order in which they appear on your ComEd bill. When you select service from an alternative retail electric supplier (ARES), the ComEd Electric Supply Charges (including the Purchased Electricity Adjustment) and Transmission Services Charges (items A and B below) will be replaced with the charges from your new ARES. Currently, almost all ARES will place their charges on your ComEd bill and some ARES will send you a bill directly (containing the ComEd delivery service charges as well as the ARES's supply and transmission charges).
Price to Compare = Electric Supply Charge + Transmission Services Charge
Combining the electric supply charge and the transmission services charge, the ComEd Price to Compare effective January 1, 2024 is 6.848 cents per kWh.

These Prices to Compare do not include the Purchased Electricity Adjustment, which is a component of the ComEd Electric Supply Charges. Please see the Section on Electric Supply below for a further description of the Purchased Electricity Adjustment.
Beginning with the June 2017 billing period, there was a new charge in the “Taxes & Fees” section of your ComEd bill. This charge is called the “Renewable Energy Adjustment” and the amount of the Renewable Energy Adjustment is different depending on your electric supply option.
Starting with the June 2019 billing period, the level of the Renewable Energy Adjustment will be the same (0.189 cents/kWh) for all customers, regardless of a customer’s chosen supply option.
A. Electric Supply
The electric supply charge is the price you pay per kilowatt-hour ("kWh") for the electricity you use in your home. The price of electric supply is determined by your choice of supplier, whether it be an ARES or ComEd.

Over the course of a year, your average ComEd electric supply charge per kWh is likely somewhere between the summer rate and the non-summer rate. Whether your average electricity supply charge for a 12-month period is closer to the summer rate or closer to the non-summer rate depends on how much electricity you use and during which months you use it. Please take a look at your electric bill or log in to your ComEd account here to see how much electricity you typically use each month over the course of a year. You will be able to see your previous electricity usage by entering your ComEd account number on this page and selecting "View Summary Data Online".
Purchased Electricity Adjustment("PEA")
The PEA is a price adjustment (credit or charge) that is the difference between the revenues from the monthly ComEd Price-to-Compare and the actual cost of electricity supplied to ComEd customers. This charge or credit ensures overall ComEd customers pay no more or less than ComEd’s actual cost of purchased electricity. The Purchased Electricity Adjustment is calculated monthly, which means that the ComEd Price-to-Compare is adjusted monthly. Past PEA values can be seen in the Historical Prices to Compare PDF and Excel. The future PEA values would be expected to average near zero for the planning year. You will not be subject to the Purchased Electricity Adjustment when you switch to an ARES.
Attention Residential Real Time Pricing (RRTP) Customers
To make a meaningful comparison between variable RRTP rates and ARES offers, customers should compare their past electric supply cost savings from the total Electric Supply section of the bill, provided by their RRTP provider, with an electric supply cost savings estimate provided by ARESs. Competitive ARES savings estimates are often calculated as a percentage savings compared to the utility's fixed-price electric supply rate stated in the Price to Compare table. Alternatively, customers can compute their average real-time hourly price in cents per kWh (each month the average real-time price is equal to the total of the Electric Supply section of the bill divided by the monthly kWh) to compare with ARES offers posted in cents per kWh. Customers should bear in mind, however, that because RRTP rates vary over time, past savings do not predict future savings, but only serve as a guide to compare past performance.
B. Transmission Services Charge
Also included in the Electricity Supply Section on your ComEd bill is the Transmission Services Charge. The transmission services charge is designed to allow the utility to recover costs associated with transmission service. The transmission services charge usually changes annually and will change again in June 2024. The current ComEd Transmission Services Charge effective October 2023 is 1.47 cents per kWh.
C. Delivery Service Charges
You will pay the charges to deliver the electric supply from the transmission system to your home or business regardless of whether you purchase your electric supply from ComEd or an ARES. These charges are listed in the Delivery Services section of your ComEd bill.
